Full details

The advent of rock ’n’ roll music changed forever the body language that predominated on universal dance floors. Where once there was the quickstep, the waltz and the regulation foxtrot, it was now possible to ‘shake that thing’ in order to express your innermost feelings. The process was simple. If you’d got it, then flaunt it. You could wobble like a jelly, shiver till you quivered, or wiggle whilst you jiggled. These were the quintessential gestures for getting the message across. The more adventurous teens would thrust their hips forward provocatively whilst scooting on their heels and crouching down. This became known as the Dirty Bop.

Needless to say, any flagrant grinding of the torso was likely to be banned in public gatherings and the term was rarely if ever used on radio. Fortunately, the terpsichorean void was filled when Elvis Presley topped the charts with ‘All Shook Up’ and Jerry Lee Lewis followed close behind with ‘Whole Lot Of Shakin’ Going On’. Quite suddenly, it became accepted that the physical attribute best applied to the rhythms of rock ’n’ roll was that of the ‘shake’. Prior to the new dawning, the terminology had occasionally been used in rhythm ’n’ blues circles. But as the rock ’n’ roll revolution grew, the concept became commonplace all across the industry.

In order to drive the point home, compiler Stuart Colman has selected fifty pertinent ‘Shakin’’ titles that are not only guaranteed dance-floor fillers, but also evoke the time and magical mood of the era. Anyone wishing to dance the Dirty Bop to this selection should do so behind closed doors.
