Full details

Across three CDs and 82 tracks, The Merry Christmas Box Of Music is a celebration of the festive season through the popular music of the fifties and sixties. There can be few people unaware of Bing Crosby’s White Christmas or Brenda Lee’s Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree, and there was a time when nearly every artist of note made either a single or LP aimed at the Christmas market. America’s music trade paper Billboard even published a separate Christmas Albums chart for eleven years, a sure sign of the festive season’s ongoing importance to the record industry. Over the years records made for the Christmas market ranged from the religious, to the novel, sentimental to the rocking and everywhere in between. Some songs like White Christmas, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Sleigh Ride and even Santa Baby have been recorded many times and they’re all represented here, but so too are less well known songs like Must Be Santa which seemed to be a ‘must record’ song in 1960 and has been recorded by artists as diverse as Alma Cogan (whose version from 1960 is in this collection), actor Lorne Green and even Bob Dylan.

Other Christmas hopefuls like Rock ’n’ Roll Santa Claus, A New Baby For Christmas and Santa Won’t Be Blue This Christmas have, quite possibly, only made it on to vinyl once, but are nonetheless worth listening to, while others, like Sleigh Ride, have had many a run out in both instrumental and vocal stylings. Many of the biggest names in recording history are here, Elvis, Johnny Mathis, Lonnie Donegan, Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin and Bobby Vee, so too are less familiar names like Jim Eanes, Tricia Marks, The Del-Vets, Barry Richards and others. They all have one thing in common – they tried for Christmas hit record glory. Some achieved their aim, others didn’t, but collectively we hope they’ll keep you entertained over Christmas for many years to come. CDs One and Two of our compilation pack in 60 Christmas recordings both popular and collectable, while CD Three commences with sequences of festive-themed instrumentals and novelty songs, before wrapping Up with Ray Conniff’s easy listening masterpiece We Wish You A Merry Christmas (including four medleys of festive favourites) in its entirety, perfectly capturing the spirit of Christmases five decades ago.
