The artists include legends like Fats Domino, Aretha Franklin, Gary U.S. Bonds, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington and Bobby Bland. The collection, which includes full details of the original label issues, is the fourth in an ongoing series chronicling Rhythm & Blues hits year by year.

The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton. A parallel series, Soul Breakout, is released simultaneously.
