Full details

From The US Charts of 1961, The Evolution of SoulSoul Breakout ’61 compiles 56 tracks by various artists displaying the development of soul music in the US charts of 1961. All of the songs were R&B and/or pop hits and many have become classics of the genre. The artists include legends like James Brown, Brook Benton, Sam Cooke, Gladys Knight, Etta James and the Miracles. The collection, which includes full details of the original label issues, is the fourth in an ongoing series following the evolution of soul year by year. The informative booklet notes are authored by respected Echoes/Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton.

A parallel series, R&B Spotlight, is being released simultaneously. The two series are intended to complement each other, with no duplication of tracks.1961 found soul pioneers Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Bland and James Brown continuing to enjoy R&B smashes and pop hits. The year saw Motown consolidating its presence in the charts with hits for the Miracles and Mary Wells and the chart debut of the Marvelettes. Proto-Stax label Satellite was responsible for first hits by Carla Thomas and the Mar-Keys. Phil Spector’s new label Philles got off to a fine start with the Crystals’ first hit.
