Full details

The first in an occasional series of digital-only compilations, Ultimate Rhythm & Blues Hits Collection 1942-1945 gathers together, in the order in which they charted, hits from Billboards’ R&B chart (then known variously as Harlem Hit Parade and Most-Played Juke Box Race Records). We have concentrated on the black acts to make the charts, but have occasionally included white artists if they feature black musicians prominently, or simply because they swing with sufficient vigour to merit inclusion. The first chart was published in October 1942 and the timescale of this compilation coincides with the 1942-1944 American Federation Of Musicians strike, which affected the major US record companies, who either settled with the union (Decca and Capitol) or stockpiled new recordings ahead of the ban (later resorting to reissuing old recordings) or circumvented the terms of the strike by backing featured singers with vocal groups. Watch out for further instalments in this fascinating series.
